8 days ago   |   By Pocket-lint

Valve is expanding its Steam Link game-streaming service with a new feature called Steam Link Anywhere. Steam Link was a big move for Valve in 2015, because it allowed users to stream games onto their televisions, but with the catch that they'd have to be on the same Wi-Fi network as their PC that was streaming the game. Valve's new Stream Link Anywhere effort is going to change all that, by allowing users to stream their games to anywhere with an internet connection - even a mobile connection. The original Steam Link was a piece of hardware that connected to your TV. Valve discontinued it...

As a software successor to the original Steam Link hardware that Valve killed off at the end of last year , Steam Link Anywhere allows you to stream any game from your Steam library to whichever of those aforementioned devices you choose. Keep in mind you'll need strong enough internet signal for both the home PC and whichever device you're streaming to for the whole setup to work. The Steam Link mobile app is like a dream concept for anyone who's ever thought how neat it would be to play PC games on your phone. In an age of gamer phones and the Nintendo Switch offering outstanding options for gaming on the go, whatever clear distinction there was between "gaming" and "mobile gaming" is disappearing fast.

Imagine: Your entire gaming library on the go, accessible at all times as long as you have a controller or a mouse and keyboard with you. And then stop imagining, because that future is...here? Sort of? Today, Valve announced the Steam Link Anywhere service, the next logical extension of the streaming features it's been working on the past few years. As the name implies, you can now stream your Steam library to just about anywhere, as long as you have a strong internet connection. Details are a bit fuzzy right now, and Valve's news post isn't helping much. The gist of it: To read this...

As part of their warm-up for the Game Developers Conference, Valve have rolled out two new features on Steam today, one for players and one for developers. For those playing games instead of making them, Steam Link is now officially usable outside of home networks , albeit in open beta. Anyone with home streaming set up from their PC and either a Steam Link box or app elsewhere can play their games on the go. Just don't go expecting instant control response on action games. For developers, the full Steam networking API and infrastructure is now free and open to all .
