Android 2.3 Gingerbread was launched in the year 2010 and exactly 10 years later, it will end the support. However, the actual percentage of devices affected would be really low as Gingerbread still runs on 0.3 percent of all Android devices, as per Android OS distribution numbers.

As of last month, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which made its debut way back in 2010, was still running on 0.3% of all Android devices, with a bunch of them apparently being keen WhatsApp users. After all, the popular messaging app's latest statement confirms support for the OS will be extended through 2020.

WhatsApp is extending support for Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread until 2020, the Facebook-owned messaging service said Wednesday, having clarified its mobile solution will continue working on that particular version of Google's operating system until February 1 of that year. Unlike the vast majority of other communications app on the Play Store, WhatsApp goes above and beyond of what's expected of it in terms of software support, even though the build of its app targeting particularly old Android versions is somewhat limited in terms of functionalities.
