Justice Department appeals approval of AT&T-Time Warner merger

2 monthes ago   |   By PhoneDog

One month after AT&T's mega acquisition of Time Warner was completed , the U.S. Justice Department is appealing the deal's approval.
A court filing today revealed that the Justice Department will appeal the AT&T-Time Warner merger despite the fact that it was recently completed. The DoJ actually tried to block the merger before it was completed, too, arguing that it would make pay TV "less competitive and less innovative." However, a federal judge ruled that the government didn't show that the deal would significantly decrease competition and so he let it continue without conditions.

DOJ files to appeal court approval of AT&T's $85.4 billion purchase of Time Warner

2 monthes ago   |   By Phone Arena

Back in the middle of last month, U.S. District Judge Richard Leon ruled in favor of AT&T's purchase of Time Warner, and against the DOJ. That decision allowed the $85.4 billion transaction to go through. Judge Leon made it clear in no uncertain terms that the Justice Department should not appeal his ruling. In addition, the judge did not force AT&T to make any divestitures to help glide the deal through court approval.
However, a court document filed today indicates that the Justice Department will appeal the decision. This decision to appeal could have been ...

The Department of Justice isn't done fighting the AT&T-Time Warner merger

2 monthes ago   |   By TechCrunch

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed to appeal a federal judge's decision to approve AT&T's acquisition of Time Warner .
Back when he was campaigning for the presidency, Donald Trump said his administration would block the deal , and indeed, the DOJ sued to stop the merger , arguing it would hurt competition.
Last month, however, U.S. District Court Judge Richard J. Leon ruled that the deal could move forward without conditions. He said from the bench, “The court has now spoken.... The defendants have won” - and the deal closed later that week .
In fact, we're already starting to see...

Not even a month after AT&T purchased Time Warner for $85 billion, the U.S. Justice Department is now appealing the deal.
A court document was filed on Thursday, July 12, confirming the news. The appeal is being led by District Court Judge Richard Leon.
Per CNBC , Leon noted in his 200-page appeal filing that "the government failed to meet its burden to establish that the deal would significantly decrease competition."
On June 15, AT&T officially completed its purchase of Time Warner following months of debating the acquisition in court. Time Warner owns major brands such as HBO, DC, and...

AT&T/Time Warner Merger Being Appealed By Justice Department

2 monthes ago   |   By Android Headlines

The Justice Department has decided to appeal the ruling in their case against AT&T and Time Warner to block the merger. The DOJ filed a document with the court on Thursday. After the document was filed, AT&T's stock did slip a bit, as expected, given that this merger could get overturned if the appeal does go through. When the decision was announced by Judge Leon last month, it's stock did jump about three percent in after hours trading.
Judge Richard Leon decided in June that the merger between AT&T and Time Warner could go through as planned, and approved it without any conditions. The...

The Justice Department is appealing a judge's ruling approving the merger of AT&T and Time Warner, according to court documents filed Thursday. The Justice Department sued to block the deal from going through in November of 2017, arguing that it would limit competition and raise prices. Judge Richard Leon ruled in AT&T's favor in June, saying in a blistering verdict that the Department of Justice did not sufficiently meet its burden of proving that the deal would allow AT&T to harm rival TV providers. He declined to attach any conditions to the deal, a further blow to the DoJ. The judge...

The US Justice Department is set to appeal the $85 billion merger between AT&T and Time Warner, Bloomberg says, citing a court filing.
The deal, which has been nearly two years in the making, was approved by federal judge Richard Leon just one month ago. It closed just days later , but the Justice Department was given 60 days to appeal the ruling.
The deal's approval was closely watched by an industry in the midst of consolidation, and led to Comcast making a $65 billion bid for 21st Century Fox's assets. That bid was later topped by Disney, who offered $71.3 billion.
