Apple is going to ruin cops' favorite tool for breaking into iPhones

5 monthes ago   |   By TheBoyGeniusReport

In recent months, a law enforcement tool called GrayKey has become publicly known as the gold standard for law enforcement agencies trying to break into encrypted iPhones. Provided that the cops have physical access to a device, the $15,000 tool enables authorities to get their way inside, given a week or so of passcode guessing attempts. The tool works on iPhones running the most recent public version of Apple's software, and has temporarily stopped law enforcement from complaining about strong encryption on mobile devices.

5 monthes ago   |   By Phone Scoop

Apple today said it will change the behavior of iPhones in order to protect its users. The company plans to alter its software to lock the Lightning port of iOS devices that are not used for an hour. The function, called USB Restricted Mode, prevents data transfer via USB, though the phone can still charge through a Lightning cable. The idea is to thwart law enforcement use of GrayShift and Cellebrite boxes, which are able to crack iOS security using a direct USB connection through the Lightning port.
