Nintendo fans have had it good for a long, long time. Unlike Xbox and PlayStation owners, they've never had to pay to play their games online. This free period, like all good things, has come to an end. With the launch of Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo has begun charging for online play-although there is a free seven-day trial available to sample it first. As with Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus , anyone who wants to get the most out of their Switch will all but have to subscribe. (Note: this doesn't affect Wii U or Nintendo 3DS owners; online service for those systems will remain...

GameStop's PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch Deals This Week

29 days ago   |   By GameSpot

GameStop refreshes its weekly selection of gaming deals each Wednesday. This week's sale is now live, bringing players some nice discounts to consider as we move inexorably toward the deluge of games releasing this fall. Let's take a look at what kind of money GameStop shoppers can save this week. Sony just announced the PlayStation Classic , a miniature version of the original PlayStation console that comes with 20 PS1 games pre-loaded. If it's as popular as the NES and SNES Classics were when they launched, it may be hard to find as its December 3 release date approaches. You can...

Have You Played. Rayman 2: The Great Escape?

29 days ago   |   By Rock, Paper, Shotgun

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time.
I'll always remember Rayman 2: The Great Escape as a deeply strange alien world. Anyone could be around the next corner, from a friendly sea monster who'd let you water-ski on them to a terrifying robo-pirate. All of them, though, would mutter away in subtitled gibberish I deemed integral to their alienness.
I just found out the PlayStation version gave everyone English voices. WTF.

How to play Japanese Famicom games through Nintendo Switch Online

How to play Japanese Famicom games through Nintendo Switch Online

29 days ago   |   By The Verge

Last night, Nintendo officially rolled out its online subscription service for the Nintendo Switch, and one of the big selling points is the inclusion of classic NES games. For $20 a year, you get access to a growing list of 8-bit titles; there are 20 available at launch, with more to be added on a monthly basis. All of the games are housed in a single Switch app, and they've been updated with features like online multiplayer.
But one of the great, largely unheralded features of the Switch is that it doesn't have any region locking. From one console, you can access Nintendo's digital store...

Fortnite Doesn't Require A Nintendo Switch Online Subscription

29 days ago   |   By GameSpot

Nintendo is rolling out its paid online service for Switch very soon, and once it's live, you'll need to have a subscription in order to continue playing most Switch games, such as Splatoon 2 and the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate , online with others. However, a handful of games will be exempt from this requirement, including Epic's massively popular battle royale game, Fortnite. Just as on PS4 and Xbox One, you won't be required to have an online membership to play Fortnite online on Switch, even after the system's paid service launches. As Nintendo clarified in an FAQ on its...

You Can Play Nintendo Switch Online's NES Games Offline For A Week

29 days ago   |   By GameSpot

Nintendo's online subscription service for Switch launches soon , and one of the benefits you get for subscribing is access to a library of NES games. Each of these classic titles supports some form of online play, whether that be competing directly against another player in Balloon Fight or taking turns controlling the action in a traditionally single-player title, but up until now, it has been unclear whether or not the NES games could be played offline. It turns out they can, but there's a slight caveat. According to the FAQ page on Nintendo's website , the NES games included in the...

Review: NES Switch Online Collection review - A tidy selection of classic games

29 days ago   |   By Pocket Gamer

Nintendo loves re-releasing classic NES games whenever possible - practically every system the company has made since the first one has had the original Legend of Zelda available in some form.
The Switch is no different, thanks to the NES game library that comes as part of the Switch Online package, which brings 20 games from Nintendo's first console to your new hybrid device.
It's a fairly robust package when all's said and done, with a decent mix of games to play and online multiplayer which is fairly smooth, and it makes for a nice addition to a service that you're probably already...
